Does AI know what your website sells?

Open ChatGPT and ask:

ā€œWhat products or services does [yourwebsite.com] offer, and who benefits most?ā€

šŸ‘‰ If the answer is vague, missing details, or says it can’t tell — that means your site is invisible to AI.

BEYOND THE SCROLL

No SEO? No Problem. Here’s Why.

AI search is officially here and it’s not just about keywords anymore. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and other AI tools are sending out their bots to search the web, looking to answer user questions with lightning speed.

However, most websites were built for Google search. And even though most entrepreneurs are familiar with SEO and Google crawlers, they miss an important fact.  AI search works differently.  It doesn’t search like Google. It summarizes, recommends, and decides whether or not your content is worth sharing. And if your site isn’t readable or ā€œunderstandableā€ to AI? It just gets skipped.

Today we’re gonna go deep into how Google crawls your site versus how AI does it.  Because if you don’t know the difference, your site could still be invisible.

šŸ•·ļø Google Crawlers = Index & Rank

  • Google sends out crawlers (also called ā€œspidersā€) that scan websites.

  • They look at links, keywords, and technical SEO to decide where your page ranks in search results.

  • The goal: build a giant index of the web and organize it into a ranked list (the search results you’re used to)

  • If you’ve been focused on SEO, this is what you’ve been optimizing for.

Here’s a better way to think of who google crawlers are and what they do.

The Librarians of the Web

  • Imagine a massive library. Google crawlers are the librarians, walking the aisles, cataloging every book (website).

  • They decide where your book goes on the shelf based on keywords, backlinks, speed, and authority.

  • When someone asks Google a question, the librarian pulls the books in order of importance — that’s page 1, 2, 3 of search results.

  • The focus is on ranking and retrieval.

Now let’s take a look at how AI bots work.

šŸ¤– AI Bots = Read & Recommend

  • AI bots (like those powering ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s new AI Overviews) scan your site for meaning, not just keywords.

  • They need clear signals like product information (like price, description, etc.) and structured data so that they can understand what you sell.

  • Instead of ranking you on a results page, AI pulls your content directly into an answer.

  • That means you’re either in the recommendation… or completely left out. There’s no second page of AI results.

Here’s a better way to think of who AI Bots are and what they do

The Personal Shoppers of the Web

  • Now picture walking into a store and saying: ā€œI need the best running shoes under $100 for flat feet.ā€

  • Instead of showing you the whole shoe section, a personal shopper hands you 2–3 pairs that match exactly. That’s what AI bots do.

  • They scan your site for structured data (reviews, product info, FAQs) so they can confidently recommend you.

  • If the signals aren’t there, you’re not even on the rack — you’re invisible.

  • The focus is on understanding and recommending.

Think of it like this: Google crawlers file you in the library. AI bot decide if you’re worth recommending to a friend. You need both, but if you’re only optimizing for the librarian, you’ll miss out on the shoppers.

Why This Matters for You

  1. You can crush SEO and still be invisible in AI search.
Google may rank you, but if AI bots don’t understand your products, they’ll skip you when customers ask for recommendations.

  2. AI has no ā€œsecond page.ā€
Google crawlers reward backlinks, speed, and keyword usage while AI bots reward clarity, structure, and context. At least with Google, you can at least be on page 2 or 3. But with AI search, you’re either in the answer… or you don’t exist.

  3. Training starts now.
Optimizing for both is the sweet spot: keep your SEO strong, but make sure your site speaks a language AI bots can understand. But the earlier you feed AI bots the right signals, the more likely they are to remember and recommend you during Q4 when buyers are searching like crazy.

So don’t just focus on SEO and dismiss learning how to get your site to show up in AI search results.

P.S. - With all the time I saved using AI last week, I finally had time to binge on Dexter: Resurrection. 🩸 No spoilers, but let’s just say I have mixed feelings about rooting for a serial killer.
